Sam is a Virginia Certified Substance Abuse Counselor, a National Certified Addictions Counselor, and is pursuing his masters degree in clinical social work. He has experience working with both adolescents and adults struggling with substance use disorders, addictions, and co-occurring issues such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. He has treated clients in all types of treatment settings including detox, outpatient, residential, continuing care, and transitional housing. Sam draws from his extensive martial arts experience as an international competitor, instructor, and coach and blends concepts and lessons learned as a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with his mental health therapy practice. He believes in, and fosters, people’s inherent courage to face past, present, and future challenges helping them discover core issues so they may develop healthy tools to work through them. He takes a cognitive-behavioral approach to therapy, understanding that the way in which we perceive our obstacles is the first step to overcoming them.
